Viola 2011 – the February edition: The Loners

A long long long long time ago before the wind before the snow, Viola were a group of friends in a basement strumming on acoustic guitars. These days balancing on the border between stomping energy and bittersweetly beautiful melancholy, early Viola were all about the latter. This month’s Viola Music Club is a look back in the past: a ye olde relic called “The Loners” has been revived and recorded for the first time ever. It’s acoustic and organic and poetically fragile. Melancholy basement balladry. Perhaps not among the greatest Viola tracks but it does engage you fairly well as it goes along and this sort of more organic style is a refreshingly different sidepath in the electronically tailored Viola of today. Thumbs up.
